this work is inspired by tamara´s "whispers of the dawn" ,,, and by a youtube movie where philippe faraut sculpted a young man.
the sculpture is almost lifesize, so my biggest head i have done so far... and, i must say, "bigger is easier" at least to judge proportions...
your comments are very welcome, as i am looking for feedback on anatomy, is it believable, or are there major flaws ? any other comments are welcome too

Hi Doris,
He's a sweet looking young man. He does have a gentle look to him which goes with your title (glad to inspire any new works). Just a couple of things that I noticed as far as the anatomy goes: the bone above the eye from the frontview looks kind of flat, the nose perhaps looks too narrow but just check and see, the skull indention above the (viewer's) left eye looks too concave, the neck looks narrow. These things may look different in person as well.
I'm thinking that the most important thing is how a sculpture makes you feel and not anatomy per se. So maybe a bit more of the story of who he is can be told. Something more in his eyes might tell the story. His eyes are so wide open looking. Maybe if the upper lid was out a bit more that would give a mood. Also, perhaps if the hair was more whispy like a breeze came to it, it would show more of where he is (such as outside etc.). I don't feel as much from him as I have from some of your other works. So that's just an open comment I hope is okay.
Look forward to how you will finish him out.
And.... congrats on the updated blog design that you have. _________________ Happy Sculpting! |

Hi Doris,
He's looking much better. I like the slight smile and how one corner of the mouth is down and one is up. Usually you think of a smile with both corners up but this gives character. The texture gives a softening effect and looks nice.
Eyes are the hardest for me to get right. I think you've done a good job on them but something about them still looks stark. If I cover the eyes up and just look at the bottom half of the face, it is pleasing. Then if I cover the bottom half and look at the eyes they look too staring. Maybe it's the big pupil hole. Somewhere here on this site I think we have something on depicting light colored eyes. I don't recall how they did the pupil but it might be helpful to look at that for more ideas. Well, that's just a thought anyway. Overall, the eyes look good and we know how hard they are to do. I look forward to more updates on him. _________________ Happy Sculpting! |

thank you tamara,,, i am glad you like the parts i like too ... yes, you are right, the eyes are not good right now. they are definitely on my list "do again" ...good with clay is, we can rework it over and over, until it is as we wish to... thank you for your comment, it is so very helpful to get feedback. _________________ my homepage and my blog showing process of projects |

Hi Doris,
nice sculpt, Tamara's suggestions have worked well. My initial thought is that the pupil on the left eye should be closer to the lid?
I am not sure if the lid would cover part of the coloured area when the eyes are in this position??. (I could be wrong...)
I think when you get to refine the treatment of the hair, that too will add to the "Whisper" in his thoughtful expression.
Look forward to the finished piece -
