This was a portrait study. I had the model for 3.5 hours - I put another hour in on her from memory. This is a medium fire, fairly heavily grogged clay called Chestnust. The sculpt is life sized:

Then I hollowed her out. Had to cut into three pieces due to some problems. I found that I was too thin in a couple of places and gouged an eye and a couple of other places - had to fix those. Because of the class schedule, I was much too aggressive in drying her - first too wet to hollow - then suddenly too dry to hollow....yet another live and learn experience.

Hi Lori,
I admire the confidence with which you have put in the forms - and captured the expression too - its a strong piece. Did you manage to save the portrait in the end?

Thanks, very much. Time will tell as to whether or not she's going to survive the firing. If, not, well, I guess I'll get practice in piecing it together Wink

Time flies and I've not done any of my updates. She fired perfectly - I haven't decided on the patina yet.

Congratulations on a great firing (although you could have used the practice of putting a jigsaw puzzle sculpture back together Smile ). I look forward to the patina that you choose.

It sure has been quiet around here lately. I've been working in my studio here and there but busy with summer activities as well.

I know, Tamara. It's been some time since I've been here and was surprised to see no activity. We've been doing some remodeling on our house and general work, which has kept me out of the loop....

I didn't realize that I hadn't given a comment about how much I love your sculpture. I thought I'd commented earlier. Anyway, she is wonderful! I agree with Stuart about her having a strong presence. Isn't it neat to be able to make something like that so quickly?! She is fresh and lively because of how quick you made her. (I think only with a model can one make something stay fresh because errors aren't made as easily and potential for reworking is lessened). It's a treat to see her.

Stuart- Glad you are busy making another portrait that I know will be outstanding as usual, hee, hee. Something to aspire to for us all!

hi lori, congratulation on the successful firing. i only can imagine how nerve testing this is "does it come out ok?, does it blow or not?"... so glad it went well for you ... i am looking forward to see the patina you choose. i love your sculpt, there is something exciting about the fleshiness in contrast to that we see bonestructure so well...wonderful, and her lips are great too. ... its interesting too for me to watch how you dealt with her hair, very nice way, i liked both, the rough first finding the shapes and movement, and now the refined... thank you for sharing, ... yes, me am way to busy for modeling too, but i am excited about the mould i am doing of my latest one, i hope to be able to show a resulting cast ...
