i am working for quite some time on this bust, but somehow, i could not go further... then , after reading the recommendations here in this forum, i got me the book by edouard lanteri, he repeatedly speak of drawing in clay, i did not understand what he means,,,, and then recently, merelee was so kind on her thread to answer my question what is drawing with clay. wow, i tried it, and what a different way to model. much more control, and much easier to concentrate on shapes... so, i tried it on my bust, and i have reworked her face completely, the other parts are still show like i modeled before, putting big clay n , carve and push these, it works somehow for broad forms, but not good controll... sorry long telling, but i am so excited to learn this...thank you again merelee !!

so here is the bust, so far, ears are obviously oversized. constructive critique is welcome, i want learn, and improve, and ... thanks for looking.

Great subject for a sculpture..........I kinda like the big ears. Goes with the pronounced nose.
the lanteri book is great..............the language a little old fashioned, but it is full of excellent stuff. Great that Mereleee 'decoded' it for you.
Whatever method you are employing.......... continue, because you are developing a nice lively style.
Don't worry to much at this stage about being accurate. You can sometimes become too detailed and finnicky and loose the freshness.
I would finish this in the same style and move on and do more.
Have a look at your anatomy book from time to time and work from life as much as possible.

Hi Doris,

She looks like she has a story to tell behind that look in her eyes and the tilt of her head. She's engaging in that way. I like what you've done with her and it looks like the drawing concept is working out very well for you!

I too like to think of sculpting in terms of drawing. Sometimes I'll use little squiggles of clay extruded from a plastic bag to add little amount here or there. I recall Heidi mentioning that when she would use oil based clay (or maybe it was polymer clay) that she would use little balls of clay as she refined the face. It works because often all that is needed is just a perk here or there and it's a minuscule amount of clay that will do the trick.

Will you use her as a model for doing a wood carving in linden?

Thanks for letting us see this work in progress.

hi stuart, thank you for your advice, i am very greatful to be able to learn from you and all others wonderful sculpteurs here... yes, the language in the lanteri book is quite difficult to understand for me, but i am struggling through, and enjoy reading his thoughts, and try...

hi lori, thank you ! yes, i am too liking her face already, will tweak it a bit, but essentially i think face is done.

hi tamara, yes this is good that you can see a story is told. i am glad to hear that... yes, my plan is to carve her, when i manage to sculpt her the way i want to. but i do not want put pressure on me right now, so i sculpt her, and then see if i want carve her. she is also means to learn more about faces, and expression for me ,,, i like that in clay (or rather plastilin in my case) one can try out things so quickly, and change again and again ,, a finished carving can be very beautiful, because of the wood quality ,,,so i want more learn to combine the good things of both.

i did some more work on her, mainly shrinked her nose and ears, and added an indication of her hairstyle... i guess, she qualifies for the recent very interesting discussion on rough/smooth modeling as i was tempted to smooth her down, but while i worked on roughing out her hair, something told me she is done, i should not do anymore, even though her hair is only indicated, and not modeled all the way ...i know, the surface is very rough and crude, but i see what i wanted express. and, it made me to stop working on her, i like her now as is, and i just wanted share with you... thank you, stuart, again, for pointing me to the connection big nose-big ears,,,Smile

Hi Doris, I like her finished look - it has a strong style and her features hold together in an unusual way to give a very distinct feel.

Beautiful work, Doris! I am so glad the "drawing" is working for you. I thought my description was woefully inadequate, and I was trying to figure out a way to show you visually what I was talking about. I am so glad you were able to figure it out!

Doris - I love the end result, it is lovely in a very unique way, looks like a face that has had many tough experiences but remained gentle and beautiful - just my fancy!

Her face makes me want to peer into to know her better. Very nice and not overworked!

hi everybody... not quite the result i wanted, but she was my very first attempt on plaster casting (with a plaster mould too),,, some things went ok, but i made too many mistakes... at least,,, i rescued her face... and, i am happy about this, as it will be a memory to my first casting experiments... i thought i share, though kind of accident...

Congrats on your first plaster cast! Now you can play around with finishes or just leave it clean and white. Smile
