Mark Richards
Biography
Mark Richards FRBS is regarded as one of the UK’s finest exponents of portrait sculpture, a genre which marries his unparalleled understanding of clay-modelling techniques with an instinctive empathy for people. He has a remarkable ability to interpret character and mood through form which is both delicate in touch and exquisite in detail.
‘I look for a sense of calm in my work, a stillness that might suggest self-containment or a thought process.’
Richards’ unusual talent for conveying the richness of sculptural form comes from a variety of sources and influences. He worked on restoration and media projects in his twenties, was a senior sculptor at Madame Tussauds in his early thirties, and has travelled extensively in Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. These experiences have exposed Richards to a variety of cultural and artistic environments. Significantly, they have added to the depth and presence that sculpture requires in its expression of both artistic quality and personality.
